I don’t know how or why you travel with me everywhere, Ari,” Peter said, tossing Al a last piece of fish. “I do know that all our walking is making us both lose weight, though.”

Al gobbled up the fish, burped, and meowed, “Aye, two fine lookin’ lads, that be us!”

Peter studied this big, orange cat that had been around ever since the first day he met Jesus. There had been four animals in all—two cats and two dogs—and they had belonged to Jesus’ friend, Gillamon. Oh, how Jesus loved these animals! One day Gillamon wasn’t around but the animals stayed. Peter figured something had happened to the old man, and the animals attached themselves to the other people they knew. The black dog and the black cat had disappeared a few years ago, but the white dog had grown attached to John and Mary. And this orange cat had evidently “claimed” Peter as his human, because lately he went everywhere with him. Peter laughed to himself. “Must be the fish.”

Suddenly an insistent knock came at the door of this home where Peter was staying in Lydda. He went to the door and cracked it open. “Yes?”

“Peter? We come from Joppa. We heard about the miracle you performed here with Aeneas who was paralyzed and had not been able to get out of bed for eight years,” a Jewish man explained. “We heard you healed him! People all over Lydda now believe in Jesus and word spread to us in Joppa!”

Peter wrinkled his brow. “Let’s be clear—Jesus healed Aeneas. I only spoke the words over him, just as I saw my Lord do, telling him to pick up his mat and walk.”

“Please, our friend Tabitha fell sick and has died. Surely you can also raise Tabitha as you saw Jesus bring others back!” a second Jewish man insisted. “She was a believer and spent all her time doing good and helping the poor by making them clothes. Please come with us, Peter.”

Peter thought back to the day he, James, and John were with Jesus when he raised Jairus’s daughter from the dead. He knew it wasn’t in his power to heal or bring anyone back from the dead. Only Jesus could do that. He nodded. “Very well, I will come with you. Let me get my knapsack and my walking stick.” He went over to gather his things and rubbed Al on the back. “Ari, we must leave. Twelve miles to Joppa.”

Al’s face dropped, but he faithfully trotted out the door behind Peter. Sure, there’ll be nothin’ left o’ me after all this walkin’.
